EMPOWER Broadband Acquisition of BIT Overwhelmingly Approved by Members

Officials with EMPOWER Broadband and Buggs Island Telephone Cooperative (BIT) are pleased to announce that BIT’s Membership has overwhelmingly approved the acquisition and merger of BIT with Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative’s (MEC) subsidiary, EMPOWER Broadband. The acquisition became official at a special meeting of the Buggs Island Telephone Cooperative (BIT) membership held on Nov.

MEC-EMPOWER Broadband Brings High-Speed Internet to Halifax County

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative’s (MEC) fiber optic network that enables EMPOWER Broadband’s high-speed internet service is now expanding into Halifax County. In June of 2018, MEC began the initial construction and deployment of its 135-mile fiber backbone to connect its substations and three district offices; ultimately, this backbone will serve six Southside Virginia counties.

MEC Director Michael McDowell Selected Southeastern Farmer of the Year

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) is pleased to announce that Michael H. McDowell, a member of the board of directors, has been selected as Southeastern Farmer of the Year for 2019 at the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo. The award recognizes excellence in agricultural production and farm management, along with leadership in farm and community organizations.

Award of Appreciation Presented to MEC

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative has been presented an Award of Appreciation by the Brunswick County Board of Supervisors for continued support and partnership with the implementation of Brunswick County’s emergency communication system for the benefit of the citizens of Brunswick County. Supervisor and Chair Dr. Barbara Jarrett Harris presented the award to David Lipscomb, vice president of member and energy services for Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative.
