FFA Students Learn About the Cooperative Difference

Timothy Hailey and John Hailey attended the Virginia Institute on Cooperative Education (VICE) in Syria, Virginia. This event was hosted by the Virginia Cooperative Council (VCC), and they were sponsored by Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC).

The primary objective of the VICE conference is to educate Virginia high school students about the unique cooperative business model through an interactive, educational and entertaining weekend-long conference. Before attending, the students visited MEC to learn more about the size and operation of the cooperative. During the conference they studied the history and importance of cooperatives and how they differ from other forms of business.

Timothy and John, twin brothers, are FFA members and students at Halifax County High School and are the nephews of Janet and David Dawson of Halifax.

Priscilla Whirley, MEC communications specialist, accompanied the young men on the trip and served as one of the group leaders. She comments, “Each spring the VCC hosts up to 64 Virginia high school students to attend this conference. The event brings together leaders from banking, purchasing, and electrical distribution co-ops, as well as other areas to share how cooperatives benefit both our members and the community.”

Sponsoring local students to the VCC youth leadership conference is one of many educational opportunities that Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative offers young people in the community.
