Mecklenburg Electric Supports SKRAPPY and Team 1413

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative is a proud sponsor of the Bluestone High School Robotics Team. Since 2004 Bluestone’s students who are future engineers, teachers, software developers, and the like have been competing through First Robotics competitions with Skrappy, the robot.

These competitions give high school students and their adult mentors the opportunity to create imaginative solutions to give Skrappy the tools to successfully compete through a maze of obstacles including the tough feats of climbing, throwing, and maneuvering during advancing levels of competition. Each year the Robotics Team 1413 fabricates Skrappy’s mechanical design, control circuits, and programming to operate similarly to the human body to contend in predefined competitions and perform specific tasks.

In 2016 the team placed 4th out of 34 teams in the Southwest Virginia event in Blacksburg, Virginia. In the Hampton Roads event in Portsmouth, Virginia, they placed 13th out of 35 teams, as well as receiving the “Gracious Professionalism” award.

The first competition of 2017 will be held March 3 -5 in Blacksburg. Marketing Mentor Marsh Passmore comments, “Throughout the years of Bluestone’s participation in the Robotics program, we have consistently had a great group of students, and our team this year is building on the successes of these past teams. We have high hopes for success this year and are especially grateful to Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative for its support. It is a treasure to have an organization that not only provides electric service, but also supports the community.”
