MEC Warns Members to Beware of Scam Artists

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) warns that there have been reports of scam artists in the area impersonating employees of the organization.  In August and again in September members have received telephone calls from someone claiming to be an employee of Mecklenburg Electric. The caller advised that the electric account at that location was delinquent and service would be disconnected unless an electronic payment was made to a specific telephone number (a number that is not a Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative number).  Members are advised to never provide such callers with any personal information; do not be persuaded or tricked into giving social security number, account information, or credit card numbers.

Other reported scam attempts occurred in July.  Members of MEC reported that individuals claiming to be employees of the organization approached their homes and stated a need to enter the house. It is rare that MEC employees need access into members’ homes; but when they do, appointments have been scheduled in advance. MEC reminds its members that employees are dressed in uniform, display an employee badge with photo I.D. and drive company vehicles displaying the yellow MEC logo. Members are advised to be very careful who they let enter their homes, and to always feel free to call their district office if they are unsure of a situation.

Any scam attempts should be reported to Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative; and if for any reason individuals feel threatened in a situation, they should call 911 immediately.  If Members receive a call concerning disconnection and are unsure about the status of their account, they can call the district office during regular office hours or call the Cooperative’s automated Customer Service System at 877-541-5737.

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative is the not-for-profit consumer-owned energy provider to over 31,000 homes, farms and businesses located in portions of the counties of Brunswick, Charlotte, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Pittsylvania, Southampton and Sussex.
