Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative Crews Head North
to Aid with Hurricane Sandy Restoration Efforts

Nov. 5, 2012

Chase City, Va. ― Undaunted after days of working to restore electricity to thousands of Virginians, crews from Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) and several of Virginia’s member-owned electric cooperatives headed north to aid with power restoration efforts in New Jersey and other states devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) deployed
13 linemen on Saturday morning.  They were sent
to help Jersey Central Power and Light, located in northern New Jersey.  As of Monday morning Jersey Central still had 372,000 customers out of power; and to make matters even rougher, the temperatures have been below freezing and there is a chance of snow on Wednesday night. MEC’s on-site general foreman says, “After driving 430 miles and seeing boats washed up on the roads along the coast, we slept in bunk beds set up in transfer truck bodies.  The first day we worked 16 hours in the foothills near Dover, New Jersey, where there are still over hundreds of thousands of residents without power in the region. Progress is slow because there are thousands of broken poles that must be replaced.  Everyone is working together and doing whatever we can to get power restored safely.”

John Lee, president and CEO of Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative, remarks, "We are pleased to be in a position to offer assistance to those in the north who were so heavily impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Our line crews are among the best anywhere, and their work will make a substantive difference in the duration of the outages in New Jersey where temperatures are plummeting. It is in times like these that our country needs to come together, and we are more than willing to assist our northern neighbors and help them get life back to normal as soon as possible. I know our guys will do a great job, and they'll capably represent our organization, work hard and return safely home to their families."
