Halifax County Natives Bobby and Lucy Conner

Featured on Cover of Largest-Circulated Magazine in Commonwealth

(CHASE CITY)  Bobby and Lucy Conner of Nathalie, Va., are featured on the cover of Cooperative Living magazine’s August issue as the subjects of its Good Neighbors-series story.

The Good Neighbors series profiles electric cooperative leaders who exemplify the spirit of cooperation and service to community--the foundation of cooperative business enterprises.

Bobby Conner recently retired from Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative’s board of directors after serving for more than 30 years, including the last seven years as chairman of the board. At the Cooperative’s recent annual meeting, President and CEO John Lee noted the valuable strategic guidance Conner provided to senior management, adding, “Bobby Conner’s commonsense approach to business and service will be missed at Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative, he is a Statesman and a Gentleman and we are pleased that, even though he no longer serves on the board, he is still a member of our cooperative.”

A lifelong resident of Halifax County, Bobby’s “day job” is clerk of the county’s Circuit Court. His other passions are farming and working in his shop, where he enjoys restoring antique cars and tractors and creating single-copy inventions, such as a self-propelled manure spreader. Bobby’s and Lucy’s interest in preserving agricultural heritage helped launch one of the county’s premier events, the Halifax County Heritage and Antique Machinery Festival, held each May.

Bobby’s civic involvement dates back to the 1960s, when he began serving as a spokesman for agriculture and rural issues. In addition to his service to Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative, Bobby has served on the Halifax Regional Hospital board, is a charter member of the Triangle Volunteer Fire Department, and helped start Carter Bank and Trust.

He met Lucy, his wife of 51 years, while in college; and the article endearingly describes how she literally baked her way into his heart by bringing him larger and larger cookies as he drove them back and forth from college to their nearby farms on visits home. For nearly 50 years, the Conners have managed both family farms, evolving from growing tobacco to raising cattle and starting a successful greenhouse operation, with both of their sons helping with the family business.

Cooperative Living is the largest-circulated magazine in the Commonwealth and is published for Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative and 10 other consumer-owned electric cooperatives.  It is mailed 10 times a year to more than 493,000 addresses with approximately 1.2 million readers. Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Chase City, is a member-owned electric-distribution utility serving more than 31,000 meters in nine Southside Virginia counties.
